How it began

It was winter 1977. I was studying for my PhD at the Engineering School of Universit of Texas at Austin, USA.  I went to have a cup of tea at the Jester Center Cafetaria.  An Indian looking student came and sat on the same table. It seemed he wanted to talk to me. He introduced himself to me.  He is Raju(not the real name) from Andra Predesh. His father a famous astroloder in India. He came to USA in 1970 to do a Masters degree in Electrical engineering. He had lot of misunderstandings with his supervisor. Could not comlete his studies. Visa expired,  could not extend the visa. Last three years he was illegally staying in USA.

We started to talk. He does not have a poper job.  He earns some money by providing astrological services to the Indian community in Austin. He asked me whether I can write a computer program to cast horoscopes, for a fee. Knowing his financial situation we struct a deal. I will write the program for him, he teach me astrology. The program was written in FORTRAN language on aCDC6600 mainframe computer.

With the help of Raju I began to learn Vedis astrology. He had lot of old books which he borrowed from his father. Astrology fascinated me. I noticed that there is a fair amount of correlation between astrology and astronomy. I enhanced my knowledge of Astronomy. The library of the University of Texas at Austin had a very good collection of books on Astronomy. Contrary to the common belief, I realised that astrologers and astronomers can co exist. The difference between is that astrologers look down and astronomers look up. Having said that I would like to say that I am still researching this fascinating art or science, what ever you want to call it.

Thirty years after my exposure to Vedic Astrology, I got an opportunity to teach Astronomy for undergraduate students.  I got a position as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. I introduced a general elective module titled 'Introduction to Astronomy'. The module became very popular among civil,  meachanical and electrical engineering students.  Its 60% astronomy and 40% astrology.

Astrology has a twofold purpose. On one hand it is used as a tool to select the right month the right date and the right time to start various auspicious rites and rituals so that the results are better. On the other hand it is used as a guide to study the destiny of an individual
Vedic astrology is based on the theory of fate. The good and the bad actions of the past life determine your fate or Karma of your present life, and the actions of your present life determine your future Karma. According to Indian astrology a person is born at that place, on that day and on that moment when his individual fate is in perfect mathematical harmony with the progress of the stars in heaven. However it does not preach total dependence on fate. Astrology lets you know what you were born with, what your possibilities are, the limitations, your strong points and your drawbacks. What type of life partners and professions suit you and to expect is also indicated. It also prescribes various remedial measures to ward off the bad effects and to enhance the good results. Astrology is your roadmap of destiny. However your fate is in your hands.
