Kuja Doshaya

Kuja Doshaya

Introduction:
In Sri lanka, mostly Sinhala Buddhists place lot of importance on horoscopes in arranging marriages. In case of arranged marriages (as oppose to love marriages) the first step is to compare horpscopes. If they do not match, the marriage comes to a grinding halt.

One of the major reasons for mismatch is the presence of Kuja Dosha in one or both of the horoscopes. Ironically, the traditional astrologers who have very little knowledge about Vedic Astrology misinterpret Kuja Dosha. As a result several young people are deprived of marrying the one they loved.

More than 80% of the people living on earth will have Kuja Dosha. So what is important is to find out is the intensity of Kuja Dosha and how its effect is annulled by other planets. The most serious impact of Kuja Dosha is the death of the husband. Once an astrologer looked at a woman's horoscope and predicted she becomes a widow. Its not a matter of concern. About 80% of the women who marry become widows. What matters is the age at which she becomes a widow. If it happens after say 70 years, it is not a serious problem. One of the partners has to go first.

What is Kuja Dosha

One of the biggest misconceptions that people have with respect to marriage is the presence of Kuja Dosha in the natal horoscope. Kuja dosha occurs, when Kuja is placed in the ascendant, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the natal chart. However, some astrologers include the 2nd house also in the Kuja dosha list.
According to Vedic astrology, Kuja is considered to be a commander-in-chief among all planets. It symbolizes immense courage, aggression, vitality, confidence and warrior qualities. It drives the fire of independent spirit and sense of purpose among individuals.
Some people beleive that all those born on Tuesdays are influenced by Kuja. This is not true. Kuja in its own house mitigate the ill effects of Kuja.

Intensity of Kuja Dosha

Kuja in the first house - No give and take. Dominates. Quarrel even on trivial matters
Kuja in the 2nd house - Harsh to partner
Kuja in the 4th house - aggressive .
Kuja in the 7th house - do not get along with in laws
Kuja in the 8th house - early death of the mate.
Kuja in the 12th - financial losses, many enemies and always in anger

Acording to some astrologers, if Kuja is placed in the lagna, 4th, 7th ,8th and 12th houses, without any aspect or conjunction of the benefit planets, then the husband of such a women will have an early death. However, if Kuja has an aspect of a benefit or is conjunct with a benefit, then this effect is annulled. If a woman with the widowhood yoga marries a man with a similar yoga of loss of spouse, then such yoga will get cancelled.

Mitigation of Kuja Dosha

Kuja dosha gets cancelled under following conditions
When Kuja is in its own sign Aries, or in the houses owned by planets, Sun, Jupitor and Moon.
If Kuja is in the 2nd house, but in the signs of Pisces or Virgo.
If Kuja is in the 4th house, but in Aries
If Kuja is in the 7th house, but in Cancer or Capricorn.
If Kuja is in the 8th house, but in Pisces.
If Kuja is in the 12th house, but in Taurus or Libra.
For Cancer and Leo lagnas, Kuja is a yoga Karkataka and so no dosha wherever it is placed.
For Kumba lagna, if Mars is in the 4th or 8th house.
If benefic Jupitot or Venus occupies the ascendant.
If Kuja is in conjunction or aspected by Jupito or Moon.
If Kuja is in conjunction or aspected by Sun, Mercury , Saturn or Rahu.

Kuja Dosha is considerably reduced, if Saturn aspects the houses owned by Kuja, but subject to the other planetary positions in the chart. Kuja Dosha of a person mitigates after the age of 28.

How it began

It was winter 1977. I was studying for my PhD at the Engineering School of Universit of Texas at Austin, USA.  I went to have a cup of tea at the Jester Center Cafetaria.  An Indian looking student came and sat on the same table. It seemed he wanted to talk to me. He introduced himself to me.  He is Raju(not the real name) from Andra Predesh. His father a famous astroloder in India. He came to USA in 1970 to do a Masters degree in Electrical engineering. He had lot of misunderstandings with his supervisor. Could not comlete his studies. Visa expired,  could not extend the visa. Last three years he was illegally staying in USA.

We started to talk. He does not have a poper job.  He earns some money by providing astrological services to the Indian community in Austin. He asked me whether I can write a computer program to cast horoscopes, for a fee. Knowing his financial situation we struct a deal. I will write the program for him, he teach me astrology. The program was written in FORTRAN language on aCDC6600 mainframe computer.

With the help of Raju I began to learn Vedis astrology. He had lot of old books which he borrowed from his father. Astrology fascinated me. I noticed that there is a fair amount of correlation between astrology and astronomy. I enhanced my knowledge of Astronomy. The library of the University of Texas at Austin had a very good collection of books on Astronomy. Contrary to the common belief, I realised that astrologers and astronomers can co exist. The difference between is that astrologers look down and astronomers look up. Having said that I would like to say that I am still researching this fascinating art or science, what ever you want to call it.

Thirty years after my exposure to Vedic Astrology, I got an opportunity to teach Astronomy for undergraduate students.  I got a position as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. I introduced a general elective module titled 'Introduction to Astronomy'. The module became very popular among civil,  meachanical and electrical engineering students.  Its 60% astronomy and 40% astrology.

Astrology has a twofold purpose. On one hand it is used as a tool to select the right month the right date and the right time to start various auspicious rites and rituals so that the results are better. On the other hand it is used as a guide to study the destiny of an individual
Vedic astrology is based on the theory of fate. The good and the bad actions of the past life determine your fate or Karma of your present life, and the actions of your present life determine your future Karma. According to Indian astrology a person is born at that place, on that day and on that moment when his individual fate is in perfect mathematical harmony with the progress of the stars in heaven. However it does not preach total dependence on fate. Astrology lets you know what you were born with, what your possibilities are, the limitations, your strong points and your drawbacks. What type of life partners and professions suit you and to expect is also indicated. It also prescribes various remedial measures to ward off the bad effects and to enhance the good results. Astrology is your roadmap of destiny. However your fate is in your hands.

Horoscope is a mathematical model It is a snapshot of the position of planets, relative to the position one is born. Other details are outside the scope of this note.
